Coanda effect(2004). McGraw-Hill.

This article gives an explanation to Coanda effect and its application. The Coanda effect is the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface, which was named after Romanian aerodynamics pioneer Henri Coanda. One of the most important applications is to be used for various high-lift devices on aircraft. Now it is also used in Dyson Airwrap to attract people’s hair to wrap around the barrel.

Sophie, M. (2018). How does the dyson airwrap work? this innovative piece of tech will make hair styling an absolute breeze., 2019, from https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/coanda-effect

This article can help us deblackbox how the Dyson Airwrap works. Dyson engineers focused on using the Coanda effect for the Airwrap. Powered by the small but mighty Dyson digital motor V9, the barrel can create a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface and, due to differences in pressure, the air flow attaches itself to the surface.

Marisa, M. (2018). Dyson wants to curl your hair., 2019, from https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/09/style/dyson-curling-irons-hair-care.html

The author has made a comparison between the traditional hair curler and Dyson Airwrap. Curling irons can damage our hair and compress the hair shaft, while Dyson Airwrap is able to avoid these problems and achieve a better result. Then, the article also introduces the whole process of this product development.

Kristina Rodulfo, after trying out the product by herself, claims that Dyson Airwrap is way less damaging than traditional hot tool because the tool relies on the high-speed air flow to set the curls instead of extreme heat. Besides the temperature, she also mentions that, ‘after six years of development and a whopping 642 prototypes, over 200 engineers and scientists created a motor that manipulates air in a phenomenon known as the Coanda effect.

When it comes to user experience, the product may not be really friendly to new beginner of curling tools since there are two curling wand heads—both with opposite airflow directions—instead of one. Due to its restricted temperature, however, users with phobia of the metal curling iron tend to think highly of the Airwrap and thus are more willing to use it every day, or at least quite frequent like 1x/week.

‘What’s inside… the Dyson Supersonic?’, last modified august 30, 2018, https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/whats-inside-the-dyson-supersonic.

Dyson digital motor V9, also contained in Dyson Supersonic, is one of the core technical components in the Airwrap because it is able to spin at 110,000rpm and thus generate 3.2kPa to harness Coanda Effect, which happens when high-speed air flowing through six slots in the barrel. Size of the motor is another advantage. “The motor draws in 13 liters of air every second while being small enough to sit on a coin. It is on average a third the weight and half the size of other hairdryer motors.”

This website provides a detailed introduction of the traditional curling iron from its definition, history, function, usage to the technical components. We use this page to get a comprehensive understanding of the working principles of the traditional curling iron so that we could make the comparison between the Dyson Airwrap hair styler and a traditional one which is made without high temperature preventing materials regarding the safety issue when doing the architecture analysis.

Here is a complete record of a patent in 1991 which shows an idea of inventing a hand-held electric hair curler that comprises adjustable hair reels to let people attach their hair for heating and curling. The patent is a combination of simple hair dryer and the traditional curling iron, and Dyson’s technical components have similar appearance and goal with this invention. From this page, we knew that Dyson’s safety guarantee comes from its improvement of applying “Coanda effect” to avoid user burning their hand when twining hair to the hot barrel compared to the previous patent, and also Dyson’s intelligent temperature control system is an invention to traditional curling irons.

Hrustic, A. (2019, March 09). 8 Unfortunate Incidences of Hair Curling Iron Burns in Photos. Retrieved from https://www.womenshealthmag.com/beauty/a19936990/curling-iron-burns/

These shocking photos of unfortunate burning when using traditional curling irons made us realize that burning is a significant safety issue in self-hairstyling which should be paid attention not only on how to avoid it through the correct usage but also by improving the safety performance in each technical part. So our team decided to focus on the safety issue of the newly invented “Dyson Airwrap.” Also, by looking at the users’ cases of burning and feedback, we figured out that the burning usually occurs when user twining hair to the barrel with their hand and when the barrel with quite a high temperature coming closer to their head. In this way, we defined our research direction on how Dyson’s technical parts ensure user safety.

This article mainly focuses on the topic of the technical principles encompassed in the Dyson Airwrap, the “Coanda effect”, which encourages the hair to curl around the barrel to style without the need for high temperatures. In this part, engineers and scientists play a critical role in solving common problems experienced by users of styling tools such as heat damage and hair becoming tangled, which distinguishes Dyson Airwrap from other traditional curling irons.
